Joy, a Chinese immigrant, enters the U.S. under the false identity of deceased girl Mae. At Angel Island detention, interrogators challenge her fabricated story as carved poems from past immigrants surround her. As her mask unravels, Mae's ghost appears, guiding Joy through questioning. With papers approved, Joy leaves for San Francisco, carrying Mae's memory and spirit into her new life.
